'TIS the season to be jolly and, with holidays fast approaching, to visit the country cousins. Sometimes I wonder though. Don't get me wrong – I'm all for keeping in touch with the extended family. They're all fine, upstanding citizens. They invite us up every year and put on a great lunch. It's just that they're slightly, well, aggressive about some things – which I've never understood.

Take Cousin Dave and his wife Rachel ("It's Rach, mate – rhymes with freight") up the coast. I love going north. The rolling hills and lush green paddocks remind me of home. The locals are relaxed and down to earth. It's all a welcome relief from the maddening CBD crowd.

There are just a few things that strip off the gloss. Dave and Rach both hate trees. They're not loggers or anything. They just don't think we need them. "They're a real nuisance," frowns Rach, gesturing vaguely towards some ancient (and clearly doomed) watergums nearby.
